Success Story

Most of the students are tribal and come from poor background. Most of the students are tribal and come from poor background. It was difficult for most of the students to have two square meals a day. Most of them were leading a wayward life completely ignorant of the outer world. Certainly the Graduation / Post graduation students need gainful employment and without proper coaching they will not be able to compete with other forward caste candidates.

Laxman Hembram is a Santal from Jharipada village of Mayurbhanj district in Orissa. He found a new lease of life when a team of teachers from the Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) visited his village for selection of children to study at KISS. He has an inclination towards learning new words in English, and a dictionary is his constant companion. He is rather inquisitive to learn and experiment new things. Though a little introvert, he mixes well with his classmates, teachers and other staff at KISS. His sober and down to earth attitude has made him a favorite amongst his friends, teachers and hostel mates. He is in grade X. He aspires to be an Doctor. He wants to serve his community and his state by becoming a doctor. KISS has given him the platform - a stepping stone towards his dream. He is making the best use of this opportunity so that his dreams can turn into reality. He will taking his exams in 2013 and hence is getting training for the next 2 years.

After our intervention, the lives of these tribal students have changed a lot. Now most of the students have been maintaining cleanliness. Their behaviour and expression of thought has changed. Some of them are also showing keen interest in sports and other activities. Some of them are also doing well in academics. He is trained in all subjects in the curriculum since the beginning of the academic year 2011.
