Success Story

Payal was an academically weak, hyperactive child who wrote poorly and made constant mistakes. Payal was an academically weak, hyperactive child who wrote poorly and made constant mistakes. She could not sit still, was physically and verbally abusive, did not follow instructions and displayed socially inappropriate behavior. She was also aggressive with other children. Both parents worked so was looked after by her grandparents who could not cope looked her after. Her home environment was tense and unhappy.

Payal was at risk for ADHD and learning disability. She started occupational therapy sessions at Ummeed, while her mother attended an ADHD parents support group. The counseling team at Ummeed also continues to work with her parents to help them develop positive disciplining strategies to use at home. Payal attends Occupational therapy sessions only. While this was the main thrust of her therapy needs, our professionals endeavor to provide inputs from other areas too, so as not to overwhelm the parent or child. Besides the OT sessions for Payal, her mother attended eight structured sessions at the ADHD parents support workshop, helping her to better cope with Payal behavioural needs. Payal’s mother also attends joint and individual counseling sessions. Generally a combination of interventions at the family level work better.

With occupational therapy, Payal has calmed down considerably. She follows instructions without abusing and throwing books like she used to. Payal has attended 8 OT sessions and the mother is now attending counseling sessions of which she has completed 3 besides the 8 ADHD parents workshop sessions. Her teachers have noticed that Payal now sits still for a length of time and plays well with other children. Her mother too feels more confident to manage her behavior after receiving help and support at the group. The family is now happy and hopeful.
