Success Story

Ramuna Devi is very poor woman from Mushar caste Ramuna Devi is very poor woman from Mushar caste (Mahadalit - Schedule caste) living in an Arwal District of Bihar. She is illiterate and did not have any knowledge and understanding of health, sanitation and personal hygiene. Her family members were not washing their hands before meal and after defecation properly. Children were not taking bath, cutting nails and loitering here and there bearing very filthy look. She was using ashes and soil for washing utensils used for cooking meals. They were storing drinking water in an unsafe manner. This resulted in diseases like cough, wheezing etc.

SGVS workers went to her village and informed them about the importance and benefits of health, sanitation and hygiene by organizing a Health Animator/Trainer. The Health animator provided them hands on learning at their doorsteps. He even cooked mid-day meals with utensils and cleaned up afterwards. We also provided them a metal vessel to store water safely to use for drinking purpose and clothing material likes Saree, blouse etc, as she is very poor and cannot afford two saris even in a year. Also we showed them how to clean their houses and gave them cleaning materials and tools for their use and creating awareness to keep surrounding neat and clean.

Ramuna and her family now take proper care of their health by washing hands before meal and after defecation properly with soap. They are cleaning the home regularly and storing water safely. Now they are happy. Learning such skills has improved her self-confidence and self-image.
