Success Story

More than 70 % of the families do not have toilets in our project area. More than 70 % of the families do not have toilets in our project area. It is very embrassing for the women and the educated girls to defacate in the open field. They have to either go before or after sunrise. It is also very difficult for the old and the sick. Mangala an educated women Grade 12 of Hirekatti village was also one of them, who was facing the above problems.

Mangala had joined the women Self Help Group Lalithambha Mahila Swa Sahaya Sangha, in her village, which was promoted by IHDUA. During one of the meetings, the staff of IHDUA intimated about the advantages and benefits of the toilet program, which was being promoted by Gram Panchayath. They also intimated that they could get assistance from GiveIndia donors. Immediately Mangala came forward to take up this program. The Multi Purpose Worker & IHDUA staff gave marking for the construction. Mangala with the help of her husband mobilised bricks, cement, sand, jelly, paid partially for skilled labour (mason) and also contributed unskilled labour. IHDUA gave Closet, door, ventilator, pipe, cleaning brush, etc.

Mangala with the help of her husband completed construction of toilet within 30 days. With help from IHDUA, she was able to get Rs.2500 reimbursement from Gram Panchayath. According to Mangala This is a very useful program. Mr.Rame Gowda, staff of IHDUA motivated us to take up this program. Though it was very difficult to mobilise materials, I took a loan of Rs.2500 for toilet construction from our SHG. Within 30 days, we were able to construct the toilet. My daughter who is studying is IN Grade 8 is very happy and so are my in laws. After seeing our toilet, 15 SHG members of our village took up this program. I would like to thank IHDUA for giving this useful and wonderful program to us.
