Success Story

Chinnaya, age 62 years, used to be a plumber but was unable to work Chinnaya, age 62 years, used to be a plumber but was unable to work once he was detected with advanced inoperable cancer of the throat resulting in difficulty in breathing, eating and drinking. A large swelling appeared on his neck which got infected; pus kept oozing out of this foul smelling ulcer. The family was afraid of contracting the disease and hence didnt take proper care of him.

Dean Foundation Palliative Care team visited him at home and did a thorough physical examination. He had lost weight as he was unable to swallow anything and was given only tea, three times a day. This left him physically weak. He had an extremely bad cough which added to his discomfort. The excruciating pain and lack of support from his family made him depressed and made him long for death. The pus was drained out of his neck and he was cleaned and dressed. He was given pain medication, vitamins (syrup form) and other medications for his various symptoms. He was counseled to help him bear the impact of the disease.

He was able to accept the difficult circumstance he was in and felt much better once he was relieved of the pain. He looked forward to our weekly visits as it provided him with an opportunity to give vent to his feelings and made him glad that some body cared for him. Other than medical care, we also provided him with nutrition powder, rice, dal, money, clothes etc. Towards the end, his condition deteriorated. He was without any discomfort up to the very end. Chinnayya was under our care for 1 year and 2 ½ months.
