Girls education is of primary importance to the development of India Girls education is of primary importance to the development of India, and yet, there is still a major gender disparity between the enrollment and retention of girls in school. The female literacy rates for Uttar Pradesh (42.2%), Rajasthan (44.34%) and Bihar (33.1%) are far below the national average (53.7%) (Source: Census of India, 2001)

Girls Stars is a multimedia project –15 books, 15 movies & 15 radio programmes, extraordinary stories of ordinary girls who have changed their lives by going to school. These are real stories of 15 girls who have worked hard to change their lives. Girl Star stories aims to inspire young girls in the age group of 10-16 years to go to school, complete their education and make their dreams come true.

It is estimated that over 700 million people have seen Girl Stars on national and regional TV channels in 8 languages. Girl Stars storybooks have been printed by UNICEF and will be distributed to Government Schools reaching over 25 million girls. And, Girl Stars stories have also been included in Government of India NCERT textbooks reaching at least 10 million children.
