Success Story

Gaya district has experienced drought for many years. Gaya district has experienced drought for many years. The major source of water like rivers Phalgu & Niranjana have slowly dried up. Over the years the ground water levels have gone down & wells have become defunct. Jhalia Devi lives in Chotaki Padariya village. She lives with her husband Shaymsunder Paswan, four sons and daughters-in-law and four small grandchildren in a large joint family. All the members of the family are agricultural laborers and their annual income is Rs. 6000.

We introduced rainwater harvesting in the drought prone Padaria village of Bodhgaya by organizing meetings of members of Self-Help groups and convincing the men and women of the dalit households to provide space for construction. We formed Jal Samiti and the memebers recommended the name of Jhalia Devi. Jhalia Devi and her family memebers provided mannual labour for construction of the RWH structure.

Jhaliya Devi is dependent on the hand pump for the requirement of water for her large family. In the monsoon the water was stored in the tank and was used by Jhaliya and her family for their household needs and they did not go to fetch water any more during the rains. The rainwater tank has helped her in reducing the family drudgery of waiting in lines and carrying water from far as now plenty of water is readily available for household use at her doorsteps.
